Check Check. One..Two.. Check... Nothing?

We are experiencing temporary email problems. This will be resolved within 72 hours (hopefully!).

In the meantime, if you need to contact us, either post a comment to this blog post, or

Bragging Rights...

We've set up a press blog for all the little mentions of Bag Lunch that we stumble across. It's mostly set up so Beck's mother can brag to all her relatives about her daughter's business.

Eventually we'll have a link to it from baglunchco.com, but for now you can get there from here:
www.baglunchpress.blogspot.com

And, thanks to all the media-folks who have mentioned us over the years. For small businesses like ours, these little blips and bloops really really help us out, as our advertising budget is pretty much um, zilch.

Deep in the Heart of Texas...

This year, Bag Lunch will be one of the many sponsors of The Stitch Fashion Show and Guerilla Craft Bazaar. We're so excited!
The event will take place in November 2006 at the Austin Music Hall, in Austin Texas. The first 500 people to arrive will get a goodie bag filled with all sorts of neat-o things from a ton of indie businesses and designers, including Bag Lunch!

from www.stitchaustin.com
"The Stitch Fashion Show and Guerrilla Craft Bazaar is an annual celebration of independent design, artistry and creativity. The idea was born when three austin designers (Jesse Kelly - Landes of Amet and Sasha, Tina Sparkles of Sparkle Craft and Karly Hand of Identity Crisis Clothing) joined forces to create a forum to show their designs, the women took it upon themselves to establish Stitch. Since it's inception in 2003, Stitch has added a 4th producer, Jennifer Perkins of Naughty Secretary Club.

Stitch is community directed rather than competition oriented, ultimately designed to showcase the work of independent designers in a new format. Stitch serves as an opportunity for participants to connect and build relationships with other members of the creative community."

you may have problems navigating around baglunchco.com if you're using Safari as your internet browser.

The problem seems to be that links to other sections don't work when viewing an individual product page.
We are currently working to fix this, but in the meantime, using your browsers "Back" button seems to work.

Those idiots at Urban Outfitters have done it again....

A few months ago mentioned an incident where Urban Outfitters ripped off a Johnny Cupcakes shirt design and passed it off as their own, selling it under their store brand. Well, they've swindled someone else.

This time they ganked ideas from Dan Goodsell, author of 'Krazy Kids Food" as well as the genius behind www.theimaginaryworld.com

visit here if you want the full story about the latest crime commited by those artless hacks at Urban Outfitters...

Needled.com

I've been reading a tattoo-related site called "Needled" for quite some time now.

A few days ago I sent in an ad-banner that included ink-work in the imagery. The ad was odd, because it was unexpected that it would include any sort of tattoo, due to the product the ad was selling and the supposed target market it appeared to be aimed towards. As Needled.com mentions, tattoos are creeping into all sorts of mainstream outlets. I find this to be a good thing, as theoretically this will help the tattooed community become less of a curiosity in the long run. (While I don't mind people asking questions about my tattoos, quite frankly I'm growing rather tired of complete strangers touching my ink. I would never even consider poking someone's nose-job and I don't see any difference between touching the tattoos of strangers and fondling a person's plastic surgery modifications. Both actions are both equally rude.)

Aaaanyway....

Today, there is a small article regarding tattoos in fashion-related advertisment, including the ad I brought to their attention,
and the fine folks at Needled included a link to baglunchco.com in the article.

How nice of them!
Because Bag Lunch is a tiny company, little mentions like these really help out. And I greatly appreciate it!

Jello® Molds and Pink Flamingos....

I've recently bought a house in the Suburbs. I've started a blog centered around all things suburbia, with the initial focus being an online diary of sorts for all the home renovations I'll be doing in the near future.

Self indulgent? admittedly, yes. But this blog will serve as a way of not having to tell the same home-related rambling stories 73 times to friends and relatives that are sprinkled throughout the country. And it will also keep these stories off the Bag Lunch Blog, so that people who don't give a hoot about my indecision regarding paint swatches and tips on lawn care can still enjoy "The Juice Box" in all it's food-themed glory.

"Freezepop Forever"

Freezepop, a crazy-good Boston band, has been selling special Freezepoppy flavored lip balms, made by yours truly, for quite some time now.

In the past, they have had Blue Raspberry and Orange special edition lip balms for sale at their shows as well as on their website. Bag Lunch just made a new batch for them! The new Freezepop lip balms are Pink Grapefruit and are quite good, if I do say so myself...

visit www.freezepop.net to learn more about the band and order some Freezepop balm!

We Interrupt Our Regularly Scheduled Programming...

I don't normally post things of a political nature on "the Juice Box", but I will make one small exception today...

HOORAY FOR STEPHEN COLBERT!
if you have no idea what I'm talking about... search this here internet for "White House Correspondents Dinner"

Alright, I'm done.
I'll now return to rambling on about food, useless plastic toys and other irrelevant nonsense.

More things i don't need...

Miniature food collectibles from Japan are the cutest things ever, and are currently my new obsession.
The best part is their size... so tiny! They're no bigger than 2 inches and are really detailed for something so small.

These little toys can be ordered from www.jlist.com, which is where some of these images are from. The other images are from the website of the company who manufactures them...www.re-ment.co.jp

http://www.pbase.com/kujira12/toys_puchi ..... this site has great photos of the different food collections that Re-Ment produces.

I'm running out of room for all the crap I collect... I'm glad these things are small!

Holy marshmallow, Batman!

I found this in a candy store the other day. This glorious thing is made entirely of marshmallow and it's lightly strawberry flavored. Why a burger-shaped marshmallow would be strawberry flavored is beyond my comprehension, but this mallowy masterpiece is fantastic nonetheless.

Look at the size of this thing!

All Marshmallow...the entire thing....

Here's the wrapper...

It's fat free!

Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear....

www.plan59.com
I love them.

According to their website: "Plan59.com is a family-friendly Web site dedicated to the commercial art of mid-century America."

Although It's really fun to browse around the site and see a bunch of great illustration, the best part of the site in my consumeristic opinion, is the plan59 store. They sell high-quality large scale prints of ad illustration art.

I've got my eye on a large print of a Swanson TV Dinner ad.

How fantastic would this look above my dining room table!?

(the image is taken from the plan59.com gift shop and is available for purchase in a variety of sizes!)

Out in the Sun, With No Work Getting Done

I've been talking about the Bag Lunch Custom Balm Workshop for quite a while now, promising that it will be online "soon."

Turns out, I've been sort of lazy lately... this nice weather keeps yanking me outside and sadly, my computer cable isn't long enough to follow. So the web update I've been hee-hawing about has fallen to the wayside.

But no longer! By the end of this weekend the Bag Lunch Custom Balm Workshop will go live! I'm not kidding this time!

The arrival of the Bag Lunch Custom Balm Workshop will also bring about two main points of awesomeness...
1. This will save me endless trip to the post office to mail out info packets.
2. Those of you who want to learn more about our custom balm will be able to get the information much quicker...
No more waiting for the info to arrive by mail! Ah, the immediacy of the internet! Technology is swell!

So yes, dear friends...the "soon" will shortly become "now."

I'm Charmed...

The fine people at Earthenwood Studio make the cutest foodie charms I've ever seen. The charms are hand formed from porcelain clay so each one is unique.

I especially like the donut charms. So cute I can hardly stand it! They make a load of other great things, in addition to these great little charms, so visit them and buy something, will ya?

Jen, the wonderful lady behind Sweet Pea Handcrafts, makes fantastic aprons in addition to a ton of other neat stuff.
My favorite apron has to be the "Reverse Hot Lucy." I love polka dots and this apron has a ton of them! You can purchase the "Reverse Hot Lucy" in two styles... a half apron that's great for light cooking duties, and a full apron for the times when full coverage in the kitchen is a must!

Thanks for Everything. Really.

Thank you, city of Brookline... for towing my car and making me roughly 5 hours late for work.

Thanks for towing my vehicle to a tow lot that isn't anywhere near public transportation.

If I didn't have the wonderful Myko offer to drive me to pick up my car, I'd probably still be walking to the tow lot.

So Thanks. Really. Made my day.

Food-Based Humor and a Chocolatey Apology.

I highly recommend the Stand-Up Comedy of Jim Gaffigan. He has a few albums out and he's very funny. A large portion of his material is based around food!

In other news... Cadbury is trying to win me back. They've sent coupons as an apology for the Mini Egg fiasco of last week.
It's working. I can easily be bought. Welcome home Cadbury! I can forgive what you've done to me.. but I won't forget.

Wednesday, March 08, 2006

Oh, how you've let me down...

I'm speaking to you, Cadbury. How could you do this to me? We've shared so much.
I bought a bag of your delicious Mini Eggs today and this is what I get....

A BUNCH OF BROKEN SHELLS!!!?
Why? I've never done anything but love you and this is what I get?

I'm disapointed in you.

I know what you're going to say. You'll say that your shells are delicate and this is to be expected.
But guess what... I'm not buying it. M&Ms have much thinner shells than yours and they would never do this to me.
(Oh, don't pretend you don't know about me and the M&Ms...you were away and I was lonely. It wouldn't have happened if you stopped by more than once a year, Mini Eggs.)

I'm not mad, just upset.
I'm willing to give you one more chance.
If this happens again, its over.

I'll call Lindt. Don't think I won't.

Oh, for the Love of Cadbury...

Guest writer and self proclaimed "chocolate-fiend" Richard has written this love letter to one of his favorite seasonal treats...enjoy!

To the half-wits who sang "I wish it could be Christmas everyday" I
say this, "Why would you deprive yourselves of Cadbury's Creme Eggs?"

In this nasty world someone in a lab coat at Cadburyland has your back.

Whoever crafted this fiendish confectionery deserves the kind of
praise usually reserved for the guy who said "And this machine cuts
the loaf into manageable slices"

So. You've bought a case of eggs. Well Done. Put them in the
refrigerator. You'll thank me when the outer wrapper comes off
easier. You don't want silvery bits under your nails, or worse still
chunks of foil zapping your fillings.

You now have an undressed refrigerated Cadbury's Creme Egg.

Then ... gnaw.

That's right, gnaw like an actual (?) Easter Bunny at the
surprisingly dense chocolately part at the top of the egg. You see,
chocolate engineers (yes they exist) will try to impress you with
stories of gigantic leaps in technology in the shaping of chocolate
on the production line, but trust me on this one, the top of the egg
is thicker.

Finally like a buck-toothed sugar-loving Jim Morrison you will break
on through to the other side. Congratulations, you have reached the
white and yellow inner goo. My choice here? Pucker up and suck that
yolk clean out. When you see the calories in one of these babies
you're going to be glad of the facial exercise.

You can expect some outer chocolate damage along the way, so as you
finish up the inner delights you should be left with about two-thirds
of the outer egg. What next? Simple, shove your tongue in there and
bring the egg into your mouth like a frog eating a bug. Sadly the
poor frog will never enjoy the pure sensation of milk chocolate
melting into the wells of your mouth, but hey they're holding out for
a woman to release their inner prince.

Have fun.

Webbed Feet and Chocolate Eggs

I'm very tired!

Baglunchco.com got an update last night, with the help of my very good friend and web-genius Chris Martell.

So, thanks to his web-coding wizardry..
some new posters are up in the gallery.
And some new flavors are up as well.
New in the Bakery: slice of birthday cake lip balm and slice of wedding cake lip balm
New in the Ice Cream Shop: vanilla milkshake lip balm

Also, I'm still working on a bag lunch custom lip balm site, and that should be up in a few days. (hopefully)

In other news... Cadbury Mini Eggs are in Season! It's very exciting. These tiny joys are only available once a year here in the States so I've got to start stockpiling them now. Last year i went to London and found that Cadbury Mini Eggs are available year round over there. While over here they are marketed as an Easter candy, thus being sold for only a short time each year, In the UK they are simply available year round and the packaging features a slightly goofy looking non-descript bird.
Those lucky ducks across the pond!

Come to think of it, all the chocolate is better over there! You can find British chocolate over here, you just have to know where to look. Grocery stores that have an International Foods section usually stock some British chocolates.
Not to sound elitist, but once you've had some of these chocolates, things like Hersey Kisses and Nestle just don't cut it anymore. Although, I still love Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.

Well, I'm off to build a website.. Where is my construction hat?

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

Here we go a Waffling...

I'm very excited.

Philosophy, a company who makes really great bath and shower gel among other things, has just released a new shower gel in "Waffle Cone" scent.

My weekend plans have officially been changed to allow myself time to track this product down!
I have horrible addiction to foodie-themed bath products. My bathroom is overflowing with colorful bottles of gels and bathing bubbles in dozens and dozens of scents.

I can't help myself. At least I smell delicious.

Johnnycupcakes.com

As a small business owner, I try and not get too involved in commenting on the business practices of other companies whether big or small. I do make one exception to this rule and that is when a large company is obviously infringing on the copyright of a smaller business.

As I am not directly involved in the situation, I will refer you to www.johnnycupcakes.com
Here you will find out what is upsetting me so much, as a small business owner.
Johnnycupcakes.com is an independently owned small company and it
upsets me greatly that they are being taken advantage of by a larger entity.

And, while you are there.. buy something! The items for sale at www.johnnycupcakes.com are
fantastic and also food-related!

Food on Film: Grumpy Old Men (1993) & Grumpier Old Men (1995)

The next in our "Food on Film" series, which logs all foods consumed on film throughout our favorite movies, is Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men.

I love these movies. They depict a pretty accurate snap-shot of how I'd like my retired life to be... full of friends and family, leisurely afternoons, good food, bickering neighbors and shenanigans. These movies are perfect for lazy Sunday afternoon viewing. Plus, the added bonus of Burgess Meredith as a dirty yet harmless old man and father to Jack Lemmon's character is a huge highlight to these two movies... trust me: hilarity ensues.

Grumpy Old Men (1993)
Directed by Donald Petrie and Written by Mark Steven Deutch
Starring: Jack Lemmon, Walther Matthau, Ann Margret and Burgess Meredith

Food on Film:
bowl of cereal
Spam
6-pack of beer
beef jerky
fresh caught fish
lollipop
unspecified frozen TV dinner
TV dinner: lasagne
cup of coffee
green Jello

whisky
Szechwan and wine
eggs with Tabasco Sauce
glass of beer
broccoli, altough not actually eaten

And on to the Second...

Grumpier Old Men (1995)
Directed by Howard Deutch and written by Mark Steven Johnson
Starring: Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Ann Margret, Burgess Meredith and Sophia Loren

Food on Film:
can of beer
5 strips of bacon (mentioned, not seen on screen)
bacon sandwich (mentioned, not seen on screen)

Marinara Sauce, although poured on 2 people, not actually eaten
Vino
salad
peanuts
glass of beer
tuna on rye

Bag Lunch News: Ice Cream!

A new lip balm set is in the works over at Bag Lunch!

The new Lip Balm Set will be Neopolitan Ice Cream which will include a chocolate milkshake lip balm, a strawberry milkshake lip balm, a vanilla milkshake lip balm and the bag lunch button. It will of course be housed in the Bag Lunch tiny tin box, like the other Balm sets.

Keep checking www.baglunchco.com as this balm set will be on the site within a week or two!
Hooray for new lip balm!

Banana Time-Frame

I would really eat more bananas if they didn't turn so quickly.
I can only eat them if they are just about to turn bright yellow, which leaves me with about a 30 minute time-frame.
If they've gone yellow.. it's too late.

Bananas are no good to me unless they are slightly under-ripe.
